Roy attended Hop Brook Grammar School and Naugatuck High School. Following graduation, he received a football and baseball scholarship to Bordentown Military Institute. Upon graduation from B.M.I., he signed a baseball contract with the former NY Giants.

Roy’s athletic career was interrupted by the call to serve in the military. Upon discharge, he worked fifteen years in the Bricklayers Union and retired from the Naugatuck Fire Department, after twenty-one years of dedicated public service alongside his brethren firefighters. He then worked ten years for the Platt Brothers & Company.

In 1980, Roy was inducted into the Naugatuck Hall of Fame, due to the fact that he was instrumental in his high school teams achieving four crowns in one year; one state title and three valley titles. Roy was awarded the All Valley honor in football and baseball and also received All State Player of the week by the New Haven Register in 1955. He was a long time member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and in 2014 was honored as the “Irish Mayor” of Naugatuck.
