Americo Vaz Teixeira Obituary

Beloved, Father & Grandfather

 

NAUGATUCK – Americo Vaz Teixeira, 86, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on September 24, 2019. Americo was born on May 15, 1933, in Redondelo-Chaves, Portugal. He was the son of the late Joao and Francisca (Vaz) Teixeira.

 

Americo was predeceased by his wife, Maria Helena (Rodrigues), to whom he was married for over 57 years, and one daughter, Francisca Dias. He is survived by five daughters and one son; Amelia Esteves, Conceicao Alves, Tina Esteves and Anna Maria Teixeira, all of Naugatuck, Lucille Fontes of Prospect and Antonio Teixeira of Watertown. Americo is also survived by his 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He also leaves many in-laws, nieces, nephews, other loved ones and friends.

 

Americo served in the Portuguese Army before he came to the United States in 1966. He settled in Naugatuck with his wife and children. He worked for the United States Rubber Company (Uniroyal) in Naugatuck. He later worked as a carpenter at Lewis Kitchen, and Scovill Manufacturing in Waterbury. He was known to many as “Americo Capitão” a hardworking, strong man.  He was an avid gardener and winemaker. He loved music and dancing, and enjoyed playing the accordion and harmonica.

 

Americo was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Waterbury. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather; we will miss and treasure our memories of him. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the special hearts at Glendale Center as well as to the staff at Seasons Hospice.

 

The funeral will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. from Naugatuck Valley Memorial/Fitzgerald Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main St., Naugatuck to Our Lady of Fatima Church, Waterbury for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery in Naugatuck.
