He was a loving generous man, lived and taught compassion and kindness to all. His main enjoyment in life was being with his family and watching them grow. Raised on the Western Abenaki Indian Reservation at Odanak/St. Francis, Canada, he moved to Connecticut to join his brothers to fight for the United States in World War II, joining in 1943 the Polar Bears 177th Engineer Construction Battalion Army Regiment, obtaining multiple decorations and the rank of Corporal. George was stationed in the Aleutian Islands (Attu), Alaska, the only US territory invaded by the Japanese. He was a very loyal American, proud to have served in the army, and talked fondly about his service and army comrades as one of the highlights of his life.
After the war, he married his first wife and love Catherine “Lena” Ouellette settling in Naugatuck and raising his three children. After Lena’s death, he married his second love Gabrielle Houde, raising two more children, remaining in Naugatuck for the rest of his life. He worked as a machinist at Precision Methods & Machines in Waterbury and later at Oxford General Industries in Prospect. He loved his work in the metal industry and took great pride creating precision detailed work.
An avid golfer, George was a longtime member of Hop Brook Country Club in Naugatuck and enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow players. He always challenged himself to improve his golf game but also enjoyed the exercise of walking many hills found on the course, making his first hole in one in 2015 at age 90. He loved to cook and the kitchen was his main conversation area where the family gathered. He enjoyed fishing, ice fishing, and all types of dancing including polkas, square dancing being a longtime member of the Central Valley Squares and lifelong member of St. Mary’s Church in Naugatuck.
