Maria Genoveva Almonte Cortes of Waterbury passed away peacefully at home on July 11, 2026 surrounded by her loving family.
Maria was born on November 26, 1931 in the Dominican Republic. As the oldest daughter of Milo and Beba Almonte, she grew up with a fierce sense of responsibility and unwavering commitment to her family. She was known for her sharp mind, her work ethic and the way she protected her family with both strength and tenderness. Even in the hardest times, she greeted people with dignity, offering what she could and never losing her faith.
She moved to Brooklyn, New York where she met her husband, Felix. They married and moved to Connecticut to start their family. Maria was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend. She found joy in praying, gardening, cooking and watching her novelas. She loved spending time with her family – calling everyone and always keeping in touch.
Maria is survived by her daughters, Genoveva Liset Cortes and Marisol (David) Violette. Her three beloved grandchildren, Caitlin, David Antonio and Caryn.
She is also survived by Abigail Cortes and Fiordaliza & Rolando Nunez, whom she loved as if they were her own children.
Maria is survived by her siblings: Mercedes, Rene, Jose, Milagros, Teresa, Luisa, Miguel and Bernardita. Her beloved nieces and nephews.
Maria joins her siblings: Antonia, Milito, Virgilio, German, Minerva and Viviana in eternal rest.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Felix Cortes and is survived by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren whom she loved dearly: Norma, Hilda, Felix, David, Evelyn, David Jr, Alex, Angie, Melissa, Cynthia, Hector Jr. …
Her legacy lives on in the values she passed down – perseverance, integrity and the belief that even in dark times, people can choose to be a light. Her memory will continue in those who loved her.
