Obituary

Naugatuck-William George Hughes, 80, loving husband of the late Patricia Ann (Scielzo) Hughes, entered into heaven on Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at St. Mary’s Hospital.

William was born in Bridgeport, CT on November 2, 1942, the son of the late John and Margaret (Lee) Hughes. He was raised in Stratford, a 1962 graduate of Bunnell High School and a long-time Naugatuck resident.  William was a proud Veteran of the US Navy and Army National Guard. He had a long career in construction before retiring from Carriage Homes.

After retiring, William (Willie to some, Bill to others and Poppy to all) enjoyed spending time with his family, cooking, gardening, tractor riding, and relaxing at his pool. He loved being with his grandchildren. He even went to Disney with them for his 80th birthday to see the Mouse and ride the Rock n Roll rollercoaster. He enjoyed telling stories of when he played football and served his country on the USS Leahy. After losing his wife, he kept family traditions going and created new ones. He was a man of steel with a heart of gold.  He would say what was on his mind but would do everything he could to help you if you needed him. Poppy and Giggi will be together forever now watching over us.

William leaves his son, William Hughes; daughter and son-in-law, Christine (Clinton) and James Janiszcak; granddaughters, Rachael Clinton and Jenna Janiszcak; great-granddaughter, Skyler Clinton; brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Patricia Hughes and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by his son, Richard Clinton, and sister, Peggy Pulkkinen.

A Mass of Christian Burial for William and Patricia Hughes will be celebrated at St. Vincent Ferrer Church, 1006 New Haven Rd, Naugatuck. They will be placed at rest together with military honors at a date and time to be announced. To send on-line condolences, visit www.naugatuckvalleymemorial.com.
